Season’s Greetings

A brand new year is here and we have put together a brand new issue for you to catch up on news, events happening in the WMS industry and what we have been doing in the last quarter.

We recently extended our service portfolio with the launch of pest control services; more on this in our ‘In Focus’ section.

We will be participating in the World Future Energy Summit 2012, the world’s foremost annual meeting dedicated towards future energy, energy efficiency and clean technologies, taking place in Abu Dhabi from January 16th to 19th. We will be showcasing Converta, the new environment-friendly technology that will help you dispose waste food and organic material in a safer and cost-effective manner.

We have had an interesting few months showcasing our products and services in various shows. The second edition of the WMS Open House was a grand success registering more than 100 visitors. Also, we were a part of the Arabian Ranches’ Community Market Day, organized by Emaar and the Middle East Association Managers Conference (MEAMCON), organized under the auspices of the Dubai Real Estate Institute, Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) and the Community Associations Institute.

Featured is an interview with our esteemed client, Serco, who has operated the Dubai Metro since its official opening and inauguration on 9th September 2009.

DM plans waste segregation at home 
The Waste Management Department of Dubai Municipality is aiming to introduce a waste management structure in homes to reduce landfills in the UAE.

Civic body urges proper disposal of restaurant oil waste
Dubai Municipality urges grease and oil waste generated by hotels and restaurants to be collected by authorised companies.  

Abu Dhabi to divert 90% of waste from landfills
Abu Dhabi aims to dump zero waste in landfills in the future as the emriate which annually generates over ten million tonnes of waste has already lost 1,800 hecatres of land to landfills so far.  

Abu Dhabi aims to cut waste by 80% by 2018
The Centre of Waste Management in Abu Dhabi targets to reduce waste by 80 per cent by 2018 in Abu Dhabi emirate.The CWM has already achieved a significant success in installing GPS system in around 85 per cent of waste collection vehicles in the emirate and would also fit the device in all waste collection vehicles by the year end. 

Road-cleaning services go hi-tech
Dubai Municipality has introduced a new fleet of 15 vehicles that will do emergency road-cleaning services.

 

Large waste bins difficult to handle, complain Abu Dhabi residents 
The larger trash cans, a symbol of a cleaner environment, are now  a cause of concern for many residents.Majority of these large-sized bins are placed half way on the road, blocking the traffic.

Liquid waste from dental clinics could be hazardous
Liquid waste from dental clinics being dumped into the public sewage system is putting residents at risk of developing serious health issues and also affecting the environment.

Dubai to drive clean with waste baskets in cars
The Dubai Municipality (DM) is distributing waste baskets designed for cars as part of a new anti-littering initiative launched during the ongoing Clean up the World campaign.

Increase dumping fees to lower waste
As the cost of waste disposal goes up, and incentives for recycling rise in conjunction, will landfills begin to shrink.

Largest Tyre Recycling Facility in UAE
An 8000 kg per hour tyre recycling facility has been opened in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and is capable of producing granulate of between 0.5 mm and 4 mm 

Plant for recycling waste oil launched 
Dubai Municipality and the Al Serkal Group have launched a Dhs10 million waste treatement facility  in Al Awir, dedicated to recycling waste edible oil from hotels, restaurants and food processing factories.

Solution to plastic bag ban is in the bag 
Major supermarkets and grocery stores say they are well prepared to cope with the ban on the supply of non-biodegradable plastic bags that comes into force in the new year.

Fall in demand halts recycling plant 
The recycling plant near Abu Dhabi's main landfill in Al Dhafra has been out of action since the end of November because of low demand for its end product - material used for road construction and other infrastructure projects. 

New plastic shopping bags are not so 'green' 
New-style biodegradable shopping bags may be less environmentally friendly than the ones they will replace. 

EEG’s 11.11.11 campaign encourages recycling
Members of the Emirates Environment Group (EEG), who were successful in collecting and depositing the prescribed amounts of recyclables were honoured by giving the opportunity to plant saplings exclusively in their name in EPAA.

25 schools to recycle print cartridges
Twenty-five schools in Dubai will initiate recycling of print cartridges from the beginning of this year, thanks to collaboration between the Ministry of Education and HP Middle East.

Use of recycled asphalt has helped reduce dust and pollution as well as helping the economy with a cost reduction of up to 30 per cent.

Trucks' GPS tracking cuts illegal garbage dumping
About 85 per cent of the garbage collection trucks in Abu Dhabi emirate have been equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking system which has minimised complaints about illegal dumping of waste. 

Center of Waste Management launches new air burners and shredders in western region of Abu Dhabi
The new equipments have the ability to burn and shred green and farms waste and the end product can be used at the compost plants.

Green is the new black in the FM world, with companies striving to implement environmentally friendly initiatives across the board.

The new regulations from the Centre for Waste Management (CWM), will  limit the kinds of products companies can use to combat infestations. 

Abu Dhabi to be the next hotspot for next generation algae biofuels
A biotechnologist at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), has helped develop the first genome-scale metabolic model for an algal species in search for the ideal biofuel.  


Masdar City: Nothing to be wasted under zero-carbon plan
Timber waste from construction activities which used to end up in landfills is now being used to create beautiful landscapes in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.
